Woodland wonder

One crisp morning, Badger and Yote were exploring the deep woods near their homestead, searching for the perfect logs for winter.
The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting long shadows on the forest floor. As they ventured deeper, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rustling leaves became their only company.
Suddenly, Yote stopped in his tracks. “Look over there,” he said, pointing to an old oak tree ahead. Nailed to the tree was a wooden sign, its edges weathered and cracked from years of exposure. The letters carved into the wood were faint but still readable.
Badger approached the sign, brushing some moss off the surface. “It’s a riddle,” he said, his voice filled with curiosity.
“What do you think it means?” Yote scratched his head and read the riddle aloud: “I’m not alive, but I can grow. I don’t have lungs, but I need air. I don’t have a mouth, and yet water can destroy me. What am I?”
The two friends exchanged glances. “This one’s tricky,” said Yote, leaning against the tree, deep in thought. "It’s not something straightforward like chopping wood or stacking logs. It’s something... different."
Badger sat down on a nearby stump, pulling off his hat to think. “We’ve solved riddles before,” he said, looking up at the sign again. “But this one... it’s got me stumped.” Yote chuckled. “Well, we won’t get through the day if we don’t figure it out. Let’s put our heads together. Maybe the forest is trying to tell us something.” The wind picked up slightly, stirring the leaves, as the two companions pondered the meaning of the mysterious message on the old sign.
