Trailhead teaser

The early morning sun cast a golden hue over the mountain, and the forest glowed in shades of amber and crimson. Fall had arrived in full, and the backcountry trails were calling to Badger and Yote. They’d been planning this hike for weeks—a full day of winding through the mountain’s hidden paths, climbing over boulders, and discovering the secret patches of chanterelle mushrooms that grew beneath the thick carpet of fallen leaves.

With their hiking boots laced tight and backpacks filled with water, snacks, and a trusty map, they set off from their homestead just after dawn. The cool mountain air filled their lungs as they trekked higher up the trail, where the sounds of the forest came alive. Leaves crunched underfoot, and birdsong echoed through the trees. A squirrel darted across their path, disappearing into the underbrush, and a gentle breeze swept through the branches, carrying the scent of pine and earth.

Yote, always a step ahead, paused to survey the trail. “Hey, Badger, I bet this trail is the perfect spot to find some chanterelles. It’s shady and damp—just the way they like it.”

Badger, who had been trailing behind to admire the views, caught up with a grin. “You’re probably right. But those mushrooms are good at hiding.” He leaned on his walking stick and pointed ahead. “Look over there, past that fallen log. That’s the kind of place they’d be hiding.”

Yote nodded. “Yep, right in the shadows. It’ll be a hunt for sure.” He glanced up at the towering trees that framed the trail, their branches swaying softly in the breeze. “Speaking of hunts,” Yote said, “let’s make this hike a bit more interesting. I've got a riddle for you that’ll keep your brain working as much as your feet.”

“Of course you do,” Badger chuckled, setting down his pack for a moment’s rest. He knew Yote always carried a riddle in his back pocket, ready to liven up any adventure. “All right, hit me with it.”

Yote cleared his throat and leaned against a nearby tree, his eyes twinkling with the challenge. The forest around them seemed to hush in anticipation as he began:

“I’m something you can see and feel,
But I’m not something you can steal.
I make you shiver, I make you sigh,
I dance on leaves and move the sky.
I have no shape but fill all space,
And whisper secrets in every place.
What am I?”
