The Christmas Tree Quest

The morning sun peeked over the snow-covered hills of the homestead, casting a golden glow across the Christmas tree farm. A fresh layer of snow blanketed the ground, soft and untouched, glistening like tiny diamonds. Badger adjusted the straps on his snowshoes and looked up at Yote, who was already marching ahead, leaving wide tracks behind him. Over one shoulder, Yote carried a long hand saw, and tied to his waist was a coiled length of rope for securing their prize.
“Slow down, Yote,” Badger called, balancing a toboggan stacked with blankets and snacks. “We’re not in a race.”
“Speak for yourself,” Yote replied with a grin, his breath visible in the frosty air. “The perfect tree waits for no one.”
The farm stretched far and wide, rows of towering firs and pines forming natural aisles. Each tree seemed to whisper in the cold breeze, their branches heavy with fresh snow. Finding "the one" had become an annual tradition for the two friends, and each year they sought a tree better than the last.
“This one’s nice,” Yote said, pausing to admire a plump blue spruce.
Badger shook his head. “Too round. We need one that’ll fit perfectly in the corner of the cabin. Something symmetrical.”
They trudged on, the crunch of snow underfoot the only sound as they moved deeper into the farm. After what felt like hours, they came to a small clearing where a magnificent Douglas fir stood tall, its branches spaced just right and its shape almost regal.
“This is it,” Badger said, his eyes lighting up. “It’s perfect.”
Yote didn’t need convincing. He swung the hand saw from his shoulder and knelt beside the tree’s base. “Let’s get to work.”
As they began cutting, the air filled with the sweet, earthy scent of pine. With each pull of the saw, the tree inched closer to becoming theirs. Once it toppled gently into the snow, they secured it to the toboggan and began the trek back home, stopping midway to enjoy some hot cocoa from their thermoses.
Back at the cabin, the tree stood proudly in the corner, its fresh scent filling the room. Before decorating, the two friends sat by the fire, unwrapping a curious little puzzle Yote had brought along.
“I found this riddle in an old book,” Yote said, passing a piece of paper to Badger.
“Sometimes cubed. Sometimes with a knot. Forever a secret this is not. Sometimes with thought this thing is bought. Sometimes by skill this thing is wrought. Most often with bright colors adorned. This might be carried, displayed, or worn. What is it?”
The answer: a present!
