Puzzling over the uplands

The crisp fall air filled Badger and Yote’s lungs as they trekked through the upland hills, alert for the sound of grouse in the brush. The hills were rugged and brimming with autumn colors, and the two friends moved carefully, their eyes scanning the terrain. They were deep in the hills when Yote turned to Badger with a mischievous grin.
“Badger,” Yote said, adjusting his hat, “while we hunt, I’ve got a math puzzle for you.”
Badger chuckled, knowing Yote was always up for a challenge. “Go on, then.”
“Old Granny Adams left half her money to her granddaughter, half that to her grandson, a sixth to her brother, and the rest—$1,000—to the dogs’ home. So, how much did she leave altogether?”
Badger squinted thoughtfully. “Sounds tricky, but I think I see a way through this…”
