Festive Fixes and Flavorful Favorites

The barnyard hummed with life on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Crisp autumn air kissed the cheeks of Badger and Yote as they worked tirelessly to transform the outdoor space into a welcoming haven for their family and friends. The barn itself stood proud, already adorned with wreaths of dried corn and bundles of golden wheat, but today’s focus was on making the yard just as festive.
Badger adjusted his hat against the pale November sun, unloading the last of the firewood onto a growing pile near the large stone hearth. “That should keep the bonfire roaring well into the evening,” he said, brushing his hands on his work pants.
Yote stood nearby, carefully draping garlands of evergreen and dried orange slices along the split-rail fence. “Looks good, Badger. Between this and the games we’ve set up, we’re ready to make some memories.”
Their boots crunched against the frosty ground as they surveyed their progress. Lanterns hung at even intervals, casting a soft glow as the day turned to dusk. A horseshoe pit was marked off near the edge of the yard, while a pile of burlap sacks awaited racers in the distance. Beyond that, the barn doors stood wide open, revealing the long wooden table inside, set with fall-themed decorations and the promise of a bountiful meal.
“Before we call it a day,” Yote said, leaning against the fence, “I’ve got a riddle to keep things lively.”
Badger smirked, taking a seat on a nearby hay bale. “Alright, let’s hear it.”
Yote folded his arms, his eyes glinting with mischief.
“Ann, Mike, Lyn, and Bill, whose last names are Juarez, Newton, Myers, and Ken, each have a favorite Thanksgiving dish: turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. But the clues are the trickiest yet. Think you can figure it out?”
Badger leaned forward, intrigued. “Lay it on me.”
Yote began, his voice low and thoughtful. “Here’s what we know:
Juarez has her favorite dish after the main meal.
Mike loves his favorite dish with lots of onion and celery in it.
Myers has her favorite dish served in slices, light and dark.
Ann hates sweets.
Newton is allergic to cranberries.”
Badger furrowed his brow, silently repeating the clues to himself. “Hmm… Juarez after the meal, Mike with onions and celery…” He trailed off, lost in thought as the evening chill deepened.
“Don’t hurt yourself thinking too hard,” Yote teased, tossing a small burlap sack at him. “You’ve got until Thursday to figure it out.”
The two friends shared a laugh as they returned to their work, the riddle lingering in the frosty air. The yard glowed with the warmth of their efforts, ready to welcome loved ones for a Thanksgiving feast to remember.
The answer:
Ann, Myers, turkey
Mike, Newton, dressing
Lyn, Juarez, pumpkin pie
Bill, Ken, cranberry sauce
