Fences, Cattle, and Golden Treasures

It was a warm and dusty afternoon on the ranch, with the sun hanging high in the sky and casting long shadows across the golden fields. Badger and Yote stood side by side, their hats tipped low to keep the glare out of their eyes as they worked on the fence. The sound of hammering and the creak of wood echoed through the quiet countryside as they fixed up the old posts and stretched new wire to keep their small herd of cattle from wandering.
"Hard work, this is," Badger grumbled, wiping sweat from his brow and glancing at Yote, who was busy tying off a piece of wire. "But I guess it needs to be done."
Yote smiled, his sharp eyes gleaming in the midday sun. "A good fence keeps everything in order, Badger. Without it, we’d be chasing those cattle to the next county by sundown."
Badger laughed, picking up another post to drive into the ground. "True enough, Yote. You always find a way to make the hard work sound better."
Yote finished with the wire and turned to face Badger, leaning on his hammer for a moment. "Speaking of keeping things in order, I’ve got a riddle for you—something about treasure and keeping it safe. Ready for it?"
Badger raised an eyebrow, pausing his work. "You know I can’t resist a good riddle. Lay it on me."
Yote grinned, and with a theatrical wave of his hand, he recited:
"Golden treasures I contain,
Guarded by hundreds and thousands.
Stored in a labyrinth where no man walks,
Yet men come often to seize my gold.
By smoke I am overcome and robbed,
Then left to build my treasure anew.
What am I?"
Badger’s eyes twinkled as he mulled over the riddle. "Golden treasures, huh? That’s a fancy way to talk about something... Sounds like it could be something familiar, maybe something we see every day."
The sun inched lower in the sky as they continued building the fence, with the riddle hovering between them like a playful breeze.
