A Chilly Evening by the Fire

The wind howled outside the homestead cabin, carrying the scent of snow from the distant mountains. It was an early November night, the kind that promised winter was just around the corner. Inside the cabin, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting flickering shadows across the walls. Badger and Yote sat in sturdy wooden chairs pulled close to the fire, each wrapped in the cozy comfort of well-worn flannel.
On a small table between them rested a steaming pot of beef stew, its aroma filling the room with the scent of simmered vegetables, rich broth, and tender chunks of meat. They each had a bowl in hand, savoring the warmth of the meal as much as the flavors. Outside, the cold wind whipped against the cabin walls, but inside, they were safe and snug in the glow of the firelight.
After a long moment, Yote broke the silence with a thoughtful expression. “You know, Badger, on nights like these, I can’t help but feel grateful for the simple things—a hot meal, a warm fire, and good company.”
Badger nodded, taking a bite of stew. “Couldn’t agree more, Yote. It’s the kind of night that makes you appreciate all we’ve worked for here.”
Yote smiled, setting down his bowl and leaning back in his chair. “Well, I’ve got a riddle that might be fitting for a night like this. Want to give it a try?”
Badger’s eyes twinkled, knowing a challenge was coming. “Go ahead, partner. Let’s see if I’m up to the task.”
Yote leaned forward, his voice low and playful. “Alright then:
What can go around the world but stay in a corner?”
Badger paused, setting his bowl down and staring into the fire, his mind turning over the question. The flickering light danced on his face as he thought it over, imagining all the things that travel yet remain in one place. Yote watched, a satisfied grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.
The wind howled again, reminding them of the long journey winter was about to take across the land. But here, in their little homestead, they sat protected from the cold, locked in a timeless moment of warmth, food, and friendship. As Badger pondered the answer, the fire continued to burn, warding off the chill of the night.
